ADVOCACY, OUTREACH, PLANNING
By supplementing the Community Board’s scant City funding, The Friends makes it possible for them to independently and professionally study, plan and advocate on behalf of our community in a way that really makes a difference.
The Friends provides our Community Board with resources to reach more people about government policies, programs and projects that affect daily life in our district. We study the issues, raise awareness, organize the community and enroll more people in the civic life of our district. We give our Community Board the vital tools it needs to be an effective force in local government.
We are an entity through which grants, fundraising and in-kind donations can flow to our Community Board since the Board can not raise funds directly. We equip our Community Board so they can do an even better job of serving all of us. Civic engagement fostered by an organized, professional Community Board can be the lifeblood of a healthy democracy for all.
INFORMATION THAT MATTERS
We supplement the postage needs of the Community Board to extend our reach and leave no one behind the digital divide. We enable the publication of our newsletter The Sixth Sense which is delivered to over 5,200 concerned citizens. And for those important in-between happenings, we broadcast timely information,
news and announcements using social media.
We look for gaps in services that need to be filled and identify emerging opportunities for filling them. We received a Brownfield Opportunity Area grant to advance economic development goals in our Gowanus Canal corridor where arts, artisanal, and new manufacturing have a home and are thriving.
We’ve supported local artists to have their works exhibited, some in large-scale public installations. With our help, Transit Police began hosting annual “National Crime Night Out” activities, and the Baltic Street Mental Health Board was able to hold music therapy jams and performances. As a fiscal conduit, we make many things possible.
